Building Cross-Sector Collaboration to End Online Animal Cruelty
Enhancing global online safety for animals and humans
Over the past few years, animal cruelty content on social media has become an increasing issue of concern for both animal advocates and proponents of online safety. Encompassing animal welfare, wildlife crime and the protection of vulnerable social media users, this issue poses a significant risk to online safety globally.

To amplify collective action and secure meaningful change, we are hosting the first ever SMACC Global Summit 2025 - the first event dedicated to uniting animal protection organizations, social media platforms, and key stakeholders worldwide in their efforts.
Online animal cruelty content
Animal cruelty content impacts a wide range of animal species, both wild and domesticated. Opportunists are using the anonymity of the online world to carry out illegal acts for profit. The extreme, violent abuse of animals is now being orchestrated on online platforms. The direct impact on animal welfare is immense, with animals being subject to physical abuse, injuries, and even death. In less violent content, many animals are used to entertain viewers, often through their incorrect treatment.

In response, the issue has received global attention in the last two years, from the public, animal protection NGOs, the tech industry and lawmakers. With the nature of social media being one with no borders, it requires a global concerted effort of cross-sector stakeholders to effectively tackle it.
